Delhi Rain Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an Orange Alert for the national capital on Monday as rain and thunderstorms swept through several areas in the early hours of the day. The alert indicates the possibility of moderate to intense weather conditions that may cause localized disruptions and urges residents to stay cautious.

Light Showers, Cool Morning for Delhi
Parts of Delhi witnessed light rainfall early Monday morning, which brought some respite from the rising summer heat. According to IMD data, the minimum temperature dropped to 25.2°C, about 1.4 degrees below the seasonal average. The weather department added that the maximum temperature for the day is likely to reach around 35°C, still lower than the usual highs for this time of year.
What Does the Orange Alert Mean?
The Orange Alert is part of IMD’s four-tier weather warning system — Green, Yellow, Orange, and Red. An Orange Alert signals the need for preparedness and heightened awareness due to the possibility of significant weather events, such as heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.
Residents are advised to:
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms
- Avoid waterlogged areas
- Keep updated with official weather updates
High Humidity, Damp Conditions
Humidity levels were notably high in the morning, measured at 80% at 8:30 AM, contributing to a sticky and damp atmosphere across the city. The combination of rain and humidity may lead to discomfort and traffic congestion in some areas.
Air Quality Remains Satisfactory
Despite the moisture-laden conditions, Delhi’s air quality showed signs of improvement. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 95 in the morning, placing it within the “Satisfactory” category, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
AQI categories:
0–50: Good
51–100: Satisfactory
101–200: Moderate
The improved air quality is likely a result of the overnight showers and increased wind activity, which helped disperse pollutants.
Weekly Weather Outlook
The IMD has forecast continued cloudy skies, chances of rain, and thunderstorms throughout the week for Delhi and surrounding regions. The changing weather is attributed to a low-pressure system over northern India, which may bring more scattered rainfall over the next few days.
