About the Crash: What We Know So Far

Air India Flight AI-171, a Dreamliner bound for London, crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad Airport on Thursday afternoon, June 12. The aircraft had taken off from Runway 23 at 1:39 PM IST, but within moments of lifting off, it lost altitude and crashed near the Meghaninagar IGP complex, just beyond the airport perimeter.

Total Onboard: 242 People Including Crew

The flight was carrying a total of 242 people, including 169 Indian nationals, 53 British, 1 Canadian, and 7 Portuguese citizens. The cabin crew included 12 members, while the aircraft was being piloted by Captain Sumit Sabharwal, a seasoned pilot with over 8,200 flying hours, and First Officer Clive Kunder, who had 1,100 hours of experience.

The crash site was engulfed in flames and thick black smoke, with videos showing the horrifying aftermath emerging across social media.
