Foxconn Builds 300-Acre iPhone Manufacturing Campus in India with Dorms for 30,000 Workers

In a significant push toward strengthening India’s role in global electronics manufacturing, Taiwanese tech giant Foxconn is finalizing construction of a massive 300-acre iPhone production facility in Devanahalli, near Bengaluru. This facility, part of Apple’s broader strategy to shift production out of China, will house 30,000 factory workers in dedicated dormitories, making it one of the largest employee accommodations in India’s private sector.

Despite recent political commentary, including former US President Donald Trump’s remark to Apple CEO Tim Cook saying, “I don’t want you building in India,” Apple appears undeterred in executing its long-term manufacturing strategy in the subcontinent.

Foxconn, Apple’s top contract manufacturer, is playing a pivotal role in this shift. At the Devanahalli site, located about 34 km from Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport, construction of both production units and dormitories is progressing rapidly. The facility spans villages such as Doddagollahalli and Chapparadahalli, strategically placed to facilitate logistics and talent acquisition.

📈 Billion-Dollar Investment & Strategic Expansion

Foxconn is committing $2.56 billion (approx. ₹21,000 crore) to this mega infrastructure. The project is being rolled out in phases:

  • Phase 1 (2023–24): ₹3,000 crore

  • Phase 2 (2026–27): ₹3,000 crore

The factory is expected to manufacture 100,000 iPhones by December 2025, according to an Economic Times report. This aligns with Apple’s broader goal of shifting a significant share of iPhone production to India—especially models destined for the US market.

🏢 Dormitories for 30,000 Workers

Foxconn is replicating its China manufacturing model by building massive worker accommodations on-site. The residential complex, designed to house 30,000 workers, is India’s largest dedicated facility for electronics manufacturing staff.

This approach has already been implemented at Foxconn’s Sriperumbudur plant in Tamil Nadu, which currently accommodates 18,000 employees.

🔧 iPhone Production Timeline

Apple CEO Tim Cook stated on May 1 that he expects a majority of iPhones sold in the US in Q2 to be made in India—a landmark shift in the global supply chain.

🌍 Foxconn’s Growing Indian Footprint

Besides the Devanahalli campus, Foxconn has a wide presence across India:

Foxconn is not alone. Indian conglomerate Tata Electronics is also assembling iPhones, having acquired operations from Wistron and Pegatron, strengthening India’s place in Apple’s supply chain.

🚀 “Project Elephant” – Redefining Make in India

Internally dubbed Project Elephant, this initiative is Foxconn’s bold move to expand manufacturing beyond China. With geopolitical tensions rising and Apple seeking to diversify risk, India has emerged as a central hub in Apple’s global strategy.
