Kerala Rain Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has retained the Red Alert for 11 districts in Kerala as heavy rain continues to batter the state, severely disrupting daily life. The remaining three districts—Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha—are under an Orange Alert, with forecasts of very heavy rainfall on Monday, May 26, 2025.
Intense Rainfall, Strong Westerlies Grip the State
Strong westerly winds are currently sweeping across Kerala, fueling widespread rainfall and thunderstorms. The IMD has cautioned of extremely heavy rainfall in several areas and advised residents to remain alert. The red alert districts are expected to witness severe weather that could lead to flooding, landslides, and infrastructure disruptions.
Rain-Related Incidents Across Kerala
The unrelenting downpour has already caused a series of rain-related incidents:
- Train services on the Thrissur–Guruvayur route were halted for nearly two hours after a tree fell on the electric lines above the track near Amala in Thrissur. Gusty winds accompanying the rain were responsible for the mishap.
- In Ernakulam, a car overturned on a flyover near Apollo Junction at Kalamassery around 5:15 AM. The driver, James from Kottayam, sustained injuries.
- A minor landslip was reported on the Ekarool-Kakkayam road in Kozhikode, where the construction of the hill highway is ongoing. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
Examinations Postponed
Due to adverse weather conditions, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) has postponed all exams scheduled for May 26. The university administration will announce revised dates soon.
Search Operation Resumes in Palakkad
The search has resumed for Mubin Murali, a youth swept away by river currents near Kurutthichal, Mannarkkad in Palakkad. He went missing Sunday evening while visiting the area with a group of friends. Rescue teams are currently working on tracing him amid challenging weather.
Strong Winds, High Waves, and Sea Warnings
The IMD has warned of strong surface winds ranging from 50–60 kmph across Kerala and Lakshadweep. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea, as wind speeds could reach 55 kmph along the Kerala coast.
Additionally, high sea waves ranging from 3.3 to 4 meters are expected along the coastline. Authorities have asked fishing communities and those operating small vessels to exercise extreme caution and suspend activities temporarily.
