GANGTOK, June 2025: After a five-year suspension, the much-awaited Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is officially resuming in June 2025. The journey will take place through the Nathula Pass in Sikkim, offering devotees an accessible route to the sacred sites of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet.
The pilgrimage was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and border tensions, affecting thousands of spiritual seekers each year. Its revival marks a significant moment for religious tourism and cultural exchange.
Route Highlights and Spiritual Significance
The Nathula Pass route, launched in 2015, offers a smoother alternative compared to the traditional Lipulekh route. Pilgrims will begin from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, crossing the Indo-China border to reach Lake Mansarovar, followed by the sacred parikrama (circumambulation) of Mount Kailash. The mountain holds deep spiritual meaning for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, and Bon followers.
Preparations and Infrastructure Upgrades
To support the safe return of pilgrims, the Sikkim government is enhancing facilities along the route. Two acclimatisation centres are being developed — one at 16th Mile (10,000 feet) and another near Hangu Lake (14,000 feet). These will provide medical support, lodging, and other necessities for high-altitude acclimatisation.
Additionally, road maintenance and safety protocols are being reinforced to ensure smooth travel conditions throughout the yatra season.
Safety Guidelines for Pilgrims
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, all pilgrims must register in advance and carry valid ID documents and permits. The yatra will run between June and August 2025.
The Nathula route is considered safer due to better infrastructure and peaceful terrain. However, travelers are strongly advised to be in good physical condition and take necessary precautions for high-altitude travel.
Local Economic and Cultural Boost
The return of the yatra is expected to bring positive economic momentum to local communities in Sikkim. From homestays to transport and tourism services, many locals are preparing for an influx of pilgrims and visitors. Beyond economics, this revival is also seen as a source of cultural pride and heritage conservation.
Pilgrims are advised to keep track of official updates, prepare well in advance, and follow all safety instructions for a fulfilling and secure spiritual journey.
