India Sees Spike in COVID-19 Cases: Active Caseload Rises to 7,121 Amid JN.1 Variant Surge

Kerala and Gujarat lead new infections as health officials urge renewed vigilance and early testing.

New Delhi, June 11, 2025 — India has witnessed a concerning rise in COVID-19 infections, with 306 new cases and six deaths reported in the last 24 hours. The active caseload now stands at 7,121, according to data released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare at 8:00 am IST on Wednesday.

This uptick, though moderate compared to earlier waves, has prompted health authorities to issue precautionary advisories amid the ongoing spread of the JN.1 subvariant, which currently accounts for 53% of all cases nationally.

JN.1 Variant Dominates: Experts Caution Against Complacency

The dominant JN.1 strain has been linked to subtle symptom shifts, including fatigue, sore throat, and gastrointestinal discomfort. While hospitalisation rates remain low, experts emphasize that early testing and self-isolation remain key to preventing further transmission.

“The virus is not gone. It’s evolving. Even mild symptoms should not be ignored,” said a senior official from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

Public Health Advisory: Stay Vigilant

In light of the current trend, the Ministry advises:

  • Wearing masks in crowded public spaces

  • Regular hand hygiene

  • Avoiding large indoor gatherings

  • Testing early if symptoms emerge

Schools, offices, and public transit authorities are also being alerted to reinforce basic safety measures without inducing panic.
